Inland Volunteer of Year Honored

Inland’s Volunteer of the Year, Ammie Breton was honored last weekend, along with a dozen other local volunteers, at the annual REM Volunteer Celebration.

Ammie, seen in the center of the photo with Inland President/CEO John Dalton and Volunteer Director Caroline Crowell, has been volunteering at Inland for five years. She greets patients and visitors at the hospital front desk and also serves as a Eucharistic Minister, delivering communion to patients who request it. Inland is proud to recognize Ammie because of her friendly, caring nature and call her a perfect fit for Inland and our philosophy of putting patients first in all we do!

Each year, Inland Hospital invites Central Maine women to enjoy a day of wellness, pampering, and fun. The World of Women’s Wellness is free of charge and offers health screenings, healthy food, look-good elements such as free manicures, feel-good elements such as massage, exercise and cooking demonstrations, and dozens of informational booths. Join us from 9am - 2pm for a fun-filled, information packed event.

Five things every first aid kit should have

  1. Antiseptic wash
    Apply first to the injury, because minor injuries can become as infectious as your child’s laughter. Follow it up with some antibiotic ointment as a second barrier to infection.
  2. Ibuprofen and Acetaminophen
    To fight fever and pain, these should always be nearby.
  3. Bandages of all sizes
    Your loved ones are one-of-a-kind, and their cuts and scrapes are no different. Make sure you have a variety of strip, pad, triangular and dot bandages – as well as rolls of gauze – to apply the proper pressure.
  4. Sterile scissors
    For cutting bandages (remember what Mom always says – don’t run with them)
  5. Instant cold compress
    This will provide immediate comfort to aches and sprains, and let you save those frozen peas for dinner.

Inland’s first baby of 2014

The Birthing Center at Inland Hospital welcomed its first baby of the New Year today at 12:33am. Sofia was born to Sylvia and James Childers of Dexter, seen in the photo with Sofia and their son, James Jr. The couple also has two teenage daughters.

Sylvia reports that she cried tears of joy when Sofia was born. “It was an overwhelming feeling of happiness,” beamed Sylvia. The Childers said the staff at the Birthing Center at Inland made their experience “awesome” and everyone treated them with kindness and courtesy, not to mention a great sense of humor.

United Way honors Inland

At its annual Campaign Celebration last week, the United Way of Mid Maine awarded Inland Hospital with the prestigious Diamond Club Award for extraordinary commitment and contribution to the United Way. Inland employees raised more than $37,000 for the United Way during their annual Employee Campaign this fall with 60% employee participation.

At the awards ceremony, United Way leaders praised Inland’s dedicated United Way committee which includes co-chairs Hope Pendexter and Sam Stafford, Angela Leary, Jen Curry, Jessica Maguire, June Allan, Nicole Robertson, Arlene Jones, Melanie Cunningham, Caroline Crowell, Bob Chapman, Stephanie Blair, Laura Gilbert-Caret, Judy Gray, and Crystal Richard.

AmeriCorps VISTA and Site Coordinator for Let’s Go! Kennebec

Inland Hospital welcomes Laura Howell as an AmeriCorps VISTA and Site Coordinator for Let’s Go! Kennebec, a non-profit organization whose mission is to prevent childhood obesity. The awards are an Inland tradition that celebrates and recognizes the work and talents of the finest professional clinical staff at the hospital. Nominations for the Clinical Excellence Award come from peers and winners are chosen for their clinical competency and excellence in customer service. This year’s Clinical Excellence Award winner is Don Goodale, Echocardiography Team Leader at Heart First Diagnostics. Tiffany Toulouse, a registered nurse in the Emergency Department is the winner of the Nursing Clinical Excellence Award.

Roadside delivery leads to Inland Birthing Ctr

A couple from Jackman took an unplanned detour on the way to Inland Hospital on July 12 where they were planning to deliver their fourth child.

The adventure started when Jill and Chris Demanski left their home in Jackman for the two hour ride to Waterville. Jill’s contractions were about 12 minutes apart when she called the Inland Birthing Center to let the staff know they’d be arriving about 8am…but baby Michael didn’t feel like waiting – July 12 was his due date after all! Only 15 minutes from Inland Jill told her husband he needed to stop the car. Chris called On-Star, the car’s safety communication system, and pulled into a driveway in Fairfield - he barely had enough time to get around to the passenger side to help deliver his first son. The couple has three daughters, ages three, five, and 11.

Inland recognized for Workplace Well-Being

Anthem Blue Cross Award Helps in Seven Maine Counties

BREWER, ME – (July 2, 2012) –
When Eastern Maine Health System (EMHS) received the Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield Foundation Youth Health Lifestyle Program (YHLP) grant two years ago, the hope was to touch 10,000 children across the Eastern Maine Healthcare Systems service area. Instead, the program reached more than 40,000 children in a seven county area. Here are a few highlights from the grant:

Success in Journey to be the Best Rural Healthcare System in America

(BREWER, ME) – June 19, 2012 –
It was in 2007 that EMHS set forth to achieve its vision - to be the best rural healthcare system in America by (September 30) 2012. A process was established to measure success, and systemwide goals were set around many initiatives, including employee retention, well workplace programs, improving patient satisfaction, physician practice quality, and chronic disease care management. While we know we still have much work to do, we’re proud to say that we’ve realized incredible success through this work, with many of our goals being achieved or surpassed.

Inland/Lakewood participate in National Trails Day

Inland and Lakewood employees accompanying some of Lakewood's residents in wheelchairs participated in the National Trails Day celebration in Waterville on June 2. The local trails activity organized by Kennebec Messalonskee Trails started at the North Street trailhead, where dozens of people travelled to the Head of Falls at the Two Cent Bridge to celebrate the opening of the Waterville Connector Trail. The trail, which is handicapped accessible, continues on the other side of the bridge around Scott Park in Winslow.

Transforming Care at the Bedside

Over the past year, Inland Hospital has been involved with improving the quality of care provided by implementing Transforming Care at the Bedside (TCAB); this process engages nurses and other key hospital staff in testing improvements that can lead to processes and procedures that are more reliable, safe and patient-centered. This in turn leads to improved teamwork and a more engaged workforce, not to mention the most important goal – increasing nurse’s time at the bedside.

Inland celebrates Leap Year baby

Inland celebrated the hospital’s first Leap Year baby. On February 29, Anthony Garrett was born at 8am to Lisa McWhorter and Ken Crader of Oakland. He weighed 9 pounds, 4 ounces and was 21 inches long. Anthony is the couple’s second son.

Dr. Pillai joins Dr. Uzma Naaz and Robert Cianfarano, PA-C at Inland Medical Associates, 174 Kennedy Memorial Drive in Waterville. She earned her degree from the University of Debrecen, in Hungary and completed her residency at Wilson Regional Memorial Hospital in New York.

Inland supports new event to raise heating oil funds

Inland Hospital joins the United Way, Kennebec Behavioral Health, People’s United Bank, and Best Western Plus to sponsor a new event to help raise funds for heating oil for local people in need. The event, “ KEEPING HEARTS WARM COMEDY SHOW & FUNDRAISER ,” will be held on Saturday, February 11, 2012, at 8pm at the Best Western Plus in Waterville. All proceeds from ticket sales will benefit the Keeping Mid-Maine Warm Program and The Warming Center.
